Study in Monterrey
By Sabrina Collier
Updated UpdatedMonterrey for students
The third-largest metropolitan area in Mexico, Monterrey is the commercial, industrial, educational, and transportation hub of the northern part of the country. With a booming economy, it’s the second-richest city in the nation, and an important hub for many global companies. Monterrey is also often considered the most ‘Americanized’ and developed city in Mexico, combining a thoroughly modern outlook with plenty of history and traditional culture to explore.
Monterrey’s attractive position near the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range has given it the nickname ‘The City of the Mountains’, and waterfalls are common in the forested mountain terrain surrounding the city. Alongside a proud industrial heritage and world-class museums, the city offers great contemporary architecture, diverse cuisine, and the trademark Norteño music scene.
Monterrey offers a high standard of living at relatively low cost, and tuition fees far lower than in the neighbouring US, giving it a score in the top 25 for affordability. The city also scores highly in the QS Best Student Cities 2023 ranking for employer activity, reflecting the strong reputation of its graduates and universities.
The high value placed on education here is reflected in the fact that two of Monterrey’s universities are featured in the QS World University Rankings® 2023.
